I would add that mind maps and other diagrams are the most powerful yet still massively underused tools to transform real-world complexity into actionable blueprints. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>You don\u00b4t have to be a designer to work professionally with mind maps. I usually draw sketches on paper or in Powepoint file, and the drawings are then made by graphic designers. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/vana.storiesforimpact.com\/et\/from-vision-to-reality-creating-the-new-design-for-stories-for-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I\u00b4ve written here<\/a> how we created the cover visual of Stories For Impact web page. The collage below demonstrates the diversity of diagram designs in various handbooks and reports that I\u00b4ve been involved with.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_2339\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2339\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img wpfc-lazyload-disable=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2339\" src=\"https:\/\/vana.storiesforimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Reports-co-authored-by-Jaan-Aps-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vana.storiesforimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Reports-co-authored-by-Jaan-Aps-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vana.storiesforimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Reports-co-authored-by-Jaan-Aps-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vana.storiesforimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Reports-co-authored-by-Jaan-Aps-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vana.storiesforimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Reports-co-authored-by-Jaan-Aps-1536x1086.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/vana.storiesforimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Reports-co-authored-by-Jaan-Aps.jpg 1588w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sample pages from handbooks and reports that I have (co-)authored.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Any mind map or other diagram can have at least two main uses:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a straightforward road map to plan getting from A to B; or<\/li>\n<li>a Medieval-style atlas that provides some hypothesis what the topography of the issue might look like based on available evidence, and directs attention to blank spots that need to be explored to grasp the full picture better.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Sometimes people say that they are too busy to draw mind maps.<\/p>\n\n<p>I think that failing to visualize any complex topic as a diagram causes (among other unintended consequences):<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>wasting much time while processing available information without any clear structure;<\/li>\n<li>overlooking important pieces of information and mental blind spots;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">miscommunication inside the team because &#8211; without the shared map &#8211; each team member will create a different structure in their own brain. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Conversely, allocating at least some time for mind mapping (individually and together with the team):<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>helps to create a well-arranged structure that enables processing available information effectively;<\/li>\n<li>facilitates spotting important pieces of information to be included and mental blind spots to be paid attention to;<\/li>\n<li>brings team members literally to the same page (of a mind map), ideally creating a healthy debate whether the current diagram represents the complexity in the most useful way or not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Below, I will demonstrate some examples of diagrams from the handbooks and reports that I have (co-)authored. They are in different languages, yet the visual language will be comprehensible nevertheless.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example 1: defining a topic and then undertaking a step-by-step analysis.<\/h4>\n\n<p><em>Reference: discussion paper &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/vana.storiesforimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Social-Impact-Investment-in-the-Nordic-Baltic-Region-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Impact Investment in the Nordic-Baltic Region<\/a>&#8221;
